To use the system's Gift Certificates you have to have taxes and shipping set up a certain way, explained below, if these settings for tax and shipping will not work for your store you'll need to use the alternative ( and recommended ) Gift Voucher setup - instructions are here

Tax Setup - Your tax rate will need to be set up in the product and you need to use the third tax setting (using Buy Now links) in Mal's tax area, and every product will need a tax value. The reason for this is that Mals doesn't have a way to mark an item as tax exempt. So the only way to set some items as taxable and others as non taxable is to enter the tax amount in every item, then set up Mals to use the buy now links to get tax amounts.

Shipping Setup - Shipping will need to use the 'Units' value ( in the product edit screen ) to determine which items have shipping applied. In other words, the shipping has to be set up so that if units=0, there is no change in shipping - and if units are more then 0, shipping is charged. So you have to use one of the options that uses units (#3, #5, #7 - and *don't* click 'Automatically set units to equal the price'). Then, every item that should have shipping applied needs to have a Units value set in the item - and items that don't (like gift certificates) need a shipping units value of zero.

OR if you ship using Flat Rate you can set up the following:

Select Option 7.  Check the box to set units = price.   Then go down to the zone and reset it to show 1 zone.  Click Update.  Now name the zone (Shipping or whatever) and then in the fist box do this:

the first 999 $4.95 (or whatever your flat rate is).

Setting up GC - start in your MM admin area first and activate the GC, then set up the amounts you want along with expiration dates. Once you finish that you'll see a link to "update your Mals-E account ". Clicking that will give you all the info you need to fill out the Discount Vouchers in Mal's.

These can be used by multiple people, multiple times.

Activate and Set Up Your GC Page

1 ) Click on Gift Certificates under the Site Extras heading in your storeadmin
2 ) Click to Activate the page on your site

GC Setup in Storeadmin

3 ) List your first chosen GC amount. Here I'm listing that I want a GC with the amount of $5
4-6 ) Same as #3 - List any other GC amounts you may want. You can have up to 4.
7) Put in the number of months you want these certificates to be active. If you want them to be good forever just put an large number in here.

Your Mal's Instructions

Log into Mal's and click the "Cart Setup" tab

In the left menu click "Discounts" to open the submenu selections

Then click "Discount Vouchers" - It may say Discount Coupons, depending on what server you account is on.

Access the Old Style Discount Vouchers

To use the Gift Certificates from your storeadmin you'll need to access the "old" vouchers area in Mal's. Either link will take you there.

Set up the discount table

Set up the table using the info you got in "Discount instructions for Mal's" steps 5, 6, 7 and 8, then click the UPDATE SETTINGS button

Issuing the Gift Certificate Number

You'll need to issue a number following the mask that you entered in the Coupon Mask field in the above step - that mask is CMMYYNNNN.

Broken down that means:

C     Voucher code in the range 1 to 5. It corresponds to one of the five different coupon types you have setup in Admin.
MMYY     The expiration date of the voucher.
NNNN     The issue number. It must fall within a valid range you specify for each type of voucher.

In our example if someone purchased a Gift Certificate for $20.00, the number you would give the recipient is:

312113000

3 = Code Type in the Mal's Discount Voucher/Coupon ( the $20.00 Certificate is #3 Code Type in Mal's )
1211 = In our example I've set the expire date to 1211 ( December 2011 )
3000 = This is the issue number which you'll receive in an email from Mal's when someone purchases a Gift Certificate.

WARNING! If you change you coupon mask then it's almost certainly going to make all your currently issued coupons invalid....
